Summer Work Projects Update

July 22, 2024

Time for an update post on the many things going on at the school. Several organized work days have already been held, but we need several more to get things done. Many hands will make for not only light work, but getting things done.

Before I go on about work projects, I want let you know about our fundraiser, coming up on Sep 6. We are having a pulled pork meal, serving from 5:30 to 8PM. Stop by and get a great meal and socialize with your friends. Due to the fact that our parking area is not ready for cars, this year’s fundraiser will be held at the RMYC building in Foraker. There will be a lot of posters in the area as well as signs at nearby intersections. Hope to see you there!

The other day I stopped by to work on curriculum and I noticed bricklayers working near the resource room outside wall. Seems the old heating system has been removed and the hole in the bricks been closed up. New windows are also being put in that wall.

I lost my vote to keep that bright green paint in the room! Not that I ever had a vote. Check the photos below to see what remains of it. I stopped in today and noticed that the old, very inefficient cupboards have been removed and new ones that match the other classrooms have been installed. Along with at least one coat of paint, part of the ceiling grid for new panels has been put up. It won’t be long until that room is ready to go. The bathrooms connected to that room still need to be made operational.

The south hallway is still crammed with equipment and bits and pieces. One thing that is missing is our new chairs. They now live in one of the storerooms off the gym, which is great because that’s where they get used most. That clears up the south hallway quite a lot.

Speaking of gym storage, the 3 rooms along the north wall have been remodeled and their usages sorted out. The first one is janitor supplies and sports equipment, the second is chair storage, and the last one is beginning to be fitted as a room for maintenance to store tools, extra light switches, ladders, and all the other bits that you need to know where they are when you are running a school. Somewhere in one of these rooms are the big canvases we put on the gym floor when we set up chairs.

We finally disposed of the 300 brand new songbooks that were left to us. A church took some, we kept some for the school, and someone else took the rest for crafts. Seems a shame, but 20+ year old songbooks are very hard to get rid of, even if they are still shrink-wrapped!

Our curriculum is pretty much all here and sorted, but we just found out about several possible new students this weekend, and with a few weeks to go before school starts, we may be ordering even more. If you know of anyone who is considering sending their children to our school this fall, please have them get in contact with us very soon, because we need to order materials for them, and some companies print a limited supply every year and when they run out, you can’t get it until next year.

We also have news in the staff department. Bruce Wagler’s brother Aaron will be teaching for us this year. He is going to arrive just before school starts, so I haven’t met him yet.

Our softball field / parking lot is progressing as well. It seems very flat at this point, not sure the grass has been seeded yet. We also are blessed to have obtained a big set of aluminum bleachers, so we will have great seating when the games begin! Maybe we will have to have one season of winter ball to get it broke in.

As you can see by the photos, we are still dealing with the extensive water leaks in the south hall area. As always, if you want to help with a financial donation to help with finishing the new roof, or any of our construction projects, you can go on our website, www.uccs.school, there is a Donate button there, or you can contact us for more information. If you would like to make a totally anonymous donation, there is a button on our website to go through the Anabaptist Financial group. You can direct them to send your donation to us, and your identity remains private. Thanks in advance for your support!
