Getting Closer!

August 9, 2023

How’s everyone doing? With the fundraiser, I got a bit behind on my blogs. Although my last post was about the fundraiser because I wanted to get you the results of that quickly, this post has a few things that happened before and some after the fundraiser. Hope that isn’t too confusing!

We now have almost all our curriculum materials in hand. We spent a few days opening all the boxes and doing inventory to make sure we got everything. Then we had to put contact paper on a number of items that are not hardback but are also items we want to use more than one year. We stamped the school name in books that may be taken home by the students, so if anyone finds a lost book, they know where it belongs.

We are also blessed to have pretty much everything we need as far as school supplies go. People have been generous and we ended up with over 42,000 sheets of copy paper. It was fun to divide all our supplies between the teachers. Almost like giving gifts at Christmas! At this writing, each teacher has a large table in the supply room weighed down with curriculum and supplies. My only regret is that the rooms were not ready to occupy at the time we sorted things, so the teachers will have to lug it all from our unused hallway to their classrooms.

Speaking of the rooms being done, they pretty much are now! The carpet has been installed in all the areas we are using now, and the baseboards were put in. Now there are just bits and pieces to make the rooms perfect. There are still areas without AC, which was an issue last week in the heat. But that will all be ready by school opening. A couple days ago, we got to move shelves into the library, and also the classrooms.

The teachers are doing a few online curriculum education seminars, and there is also some training in Pennsylvania that the teachers are doing, and then those who live out of our area will all be heading for the school. It will be interesting to see how each teacher decorates their rooms and gives it their personal touch. We certainly want them to feel like they have a home here.

The doors to the rooms are painted and being hung. We will have new locks on all the doors, so we need to install those. Since they will need a lot of work drilling and chiseling, I am glad this job belongs to someone else. You only get one chance at that job. We may be renting out various areas of the school at some point for meetings, gatherings, etc., so we need to be able to restrict access to areas that aren’t being rented. Maybe some day when we get our scoreboard hung up we can host basketball tourneys!

One very nice item we picked up recently is a copier. It’s one of those big ones that can hold several different types of paper. A local company let people know that they are buying all new equipment and people could come and get things for free! One of the guys ran down there and the copier was still available. Works very well so far, although it seems to be alive during setup. Make all kinds of beeps and chirping noises for a couple minutes. I’m thinking of naming it!
