Changing Colors

May 13, 2023

Greetings! Today we will take a look at the painting that has been going on at the school. Although there weren’t a lot of surfaces without paint, it was almost all dirty, or chipped, and most of all, totally the wrong color! It is amazing what some people think a good color was.

Not only that, but a few of the rooms in the south hall have been “decorated”, to use that term very loosely. One room is bright green of several shades, with trees painted on the walls, Another is a brighter blue, with a large NASCAR painting on one wall. Another wall has a large amateur mural on a wall that to me looks kind of like a peace sign, others think it is a Ferris wheel. Either way, it has to go!

A while back, we picked one day to be mostly painting day. This was a day that saw more ladies than usual coming to the work day, as well as older children. Although it was the usual less than fun temperature, the work kept people warm, and we had plenty of heaters. It will seem strange this summer to be able to work in the building when it is warmer. Some day this winter when I was there, even though I wore a coat and was working, it took several hours after going home to truly feel warm to the core again. But these are the things that make memories.

The focus on painting day was the north hall where we will be doing school to begin with. Bright orange, yellow, and dingy tan were some of the colors we had to start with. Inside the classrooms and the hallway, as well as the office, were what we did this day. I am not 100% on this, but I don’t think the restrooms needed much if any, being mostly tiled. We are fortunate that most of the tiled areas, as well as the glass block in the office, are in really good shape.

There are a few other places we will paint when we get time, but we need to start with the rooms critical to starting school.

We wanted to paint at this stage, because one of the next big jobs is windows, and we don’t really want to clean paint off the glass. It’s easier to touch up a cement block wall than scrape paint off windows. Before the painting started, there was cleaning and some sanding to do as well. Then the painting started. We pretty much went with white, whatever that means. If you have ever shopped for “white” paint, the definition is pretty broad.

Since the doors to the rooms have been removed, those will be done later. There is still a lot of opinion about what colors to paint the doors. I suspect the doors and frames will be painted in the school colors, although my vote is for very bright primary colors! Yeah, I’m a rebel when it comes to colors.

A few days after painting, a couple of us were measuring the rooms for the ceiling tile grids and we wrote the measurements on the walls with black marker. We about gave some people a heart attack when they saw it, until we reminded them that the marks will be covered up by the blackboards!

At this point I think most of the painting is done, but if you like to paint and want something to get you out of the house, contact us and see what is remaining. I am sure there will be some painting needed backstage where we are installing a kitchen. You can always get your name on the list to be called when we need someone.

If you would like to do some work at the school but would rather work during the week, let someone know and we can open the building for you and show you what needs doing. There is a lot of work being done here and there outside of work days. As always, if you would like to donate any items or money to our project, don’t hesitate to contact us. You can go on our website, www.uccs.school, there is a Donate button there, or you can contact us for more information about what we might be needing.

I do know we will be needing more good sturdy metal folding chairs for functions at the school, and maybe even tables for meals, so if you have any, or know of a source where we could get these donated, let us know.
